3rd Running club tomorrow (9/10/2013)

We are very excited about our running club tomorrow (9/10).

Last week, we had a 1/2 mile run for time to serve as a starting point in our training.  We had runners that were able to complete a 1/2 mile in 3:03 to 5:23 and everything in between.  Our goal is to work up to at least a mile run without stopping; with a stretch goal of completing a 5k (3 miles).

We created three student groups based on their times.  In the small groups, students discussed with each other how they felt during the half mile run, things that went well with the run, and how they want to improve for the next half mile run.  Many students stated that wanted to run faster, others said they wanted to run without having a pain in their side, and some just wanted to run the whole time.

This week, we will be ..

- Warm-up -- 1 lap relay (four people on a team) - 5 minutes
- Stretch - 5 minutes
- Lesson -- Form - using your arms - 5 minutes
- Group work - 20 minutes focused on individual goals.
- Stretch/wrap up 5 minutes

Some good resources to view with your child

See you all on the Track! (via @msmacwilliams - Twitter Feed)

2nd Running Club

We are excited about our second running club this week.  Last week we had over 40 runners join us!  We were able to run over a mile during the running session.  Some of our students ran up to two miles. We had the students do a tempo run (ran for one minute and then walked for 30 seconds).  We were also able to run around the school to get some more cardio in for the day.

This week we will be doing a time 1/2 mile run to help our students group themselves by speed, but also by drive.

August 20th Running Club Cancelled due to weather

Next Tuesday (August 26th) will start our running club, students will be dismissed from the classrooms at 3:40 with their book bags.  They will come to room 313 and 314.  Students will leave their bags and other items in these rooms.  The students will participate in the running club outside until 4:40. The running club will come up to the car pool area and students will dismiss through the car pool line.  If a student attends the YMCA, then they will go to the cafeteria to check-in.  Please be sure that your child is picked up by 4:45.

Reminders --
Please be sure that your runner has comfortable clothes and shoes.  Students with flip flops or not appropriate running attire will not be able to run.   It is also essential that students have a water bottle filled with water to stay hydrated for their safety.  We try and reduce the number of times students are going into the building as this takes away from running activities.

Second Week of Running Club

Way to go runners!  We had 66 students at running club this week!  We did a half mile run to see where we are at with cardio and speed.  Our fastest runners finished at 3:03!  Thanks to all the parent volunteers that recorded times, ran with the students, and/or cheered on the students.  It was a huge help!

Next week we will be dividing the runners into four groups.  For the next two weeks we will be working on building speed, cardio, hills, and running without stopping around the school grounds.  We will be doing two stations each week.

First Running Club in the Books

We had a great turnout for our first running club!  We had 53 students running with us in the heat.  Mrs. Fernandez with the students did a great job in leading us in stretching before and after running.  After a few warm up laps we did some 2 lap repeats to work on our condition and discussed pacing.  Pacing will be a theme and discussion point for most of the running clubs.

We discussed that as we begin running we need to remember the talk test, that is if you can talk to the person next to you, then you are going an appropriate speed.  Talk test appropriate for beginners.

The rest of the running club we separate into two groups.  One group that thought jogging was too slow and wanted to run faster and the second group thought jogging was a good pace.  Our next running club will be similar in its organization and schedule.  We did three more repeats for a total of over a mile!

Runners remember to bring water bottles (we will have access to additional water), shorts, hat or visor and eat a good lunch!  Also remember it is about your running and how you are feeling, not the person next to you.

See you all next Tuesday!

First Running Club!

Brassfield Runners,

We are very excited about our first running club tomorrow afternoon!  We will start by going to room 313 (girls) and 314 (boys) and signing in with Mr. Shillings.  The running club will be meeting outside immediately after check-in.  We will do some warm up running, stretching, fitness check, intervals, cool down, stretch and then packing up to go home.

By 4:45, the runners will come out to the carpool loop at the front of the school.  Parents, please park in the carpool loop and stay close to your cars. For safety and quick dismissal the runners will come to your cars.   Running Club Adults will be at dismissal to direct traffic.

Reminders --- Students be sure to where comfortable athletic shoes, tshirt, and shorts, water bottle, and sunscreen if need (staff members are not allowed to apply sunscreen).

We looking forward to seeing you all out at the track!
